sneak peek @ daily d’s latest
e-decorating room service

This home office space is for a client in Michigan.  Shonte and her husband are police officers and she will be starting law school and wanted a stylish space to study.  They also use this room to view TV so we had to veer away from the traditional approach to setting up an office.  They have a built-in desk already but need additional workspace.  I found a light weight desk with wheels on the back legs which will slide right up to the left side of the built-in desk forming a L shape workspace.  I also had to find a way to store all her law books and found a large, but not bulky bookcase tower.  I decided to make her built-in desk wall a focal point by selecting a bold wallpaper of typography.  It will also help the monitor blend in to the background.  Black shelving along with black wall file holders will also blend in and help with organization.

The chair is comfy enough to use to watch TV and the fabric coordinates nicely with the wall color.  All the colors are muted to help balance the black accents in the room.  On the opposite wall,  is a seating area.  I chose 2 acrylic, small end tables instead of a bulky coffee table.  Plug-in pendants are also a great space saver.

For a big blank wall I suggested diy extra large bulletin boards using picture molding, cork and covered in a light burlap fabric with nailhead trim.  Here is a similar look.

With some final touches the space has a personal & cohesive look perfect for a future lawyer.

Today’s Spotlight…LLI Design

LLI Design worked on this 3000 sq foot townhouse in Crouch End, North London enjoying views towards historic Alexander Palace.
With such an airy environment it was important to maintain the drama of the space while bringing a human dimension by adding comfort and well scaled furniture so that the space did not appear too overwhelming.
On the ground floor, LLI Design decided to keep the kitchen area to the back of the open plan room – so it wasn’t visible from above.  The kitchen included a central island – with views to the garden so cooking and socializing could combine.
A dramatic contemporary chandelier spirals past the first floor living area down towards the ground floor dining area, again helping to visually join both areas together.  Lacquered furniture choices along with  Bertoia dining chairs contrast nicely with the neutral tones of the kitchen and TV area.

unique property

I have a fondness for homes with history.  My own home is over 200 years old.  In some ways decorating an older home with good bones is easier because you can highlight the charm of the house.  The property below which is listed with real estate provider, Savills is a great example of a unique home filled with history and character.  This home was once an old paper mill built in the early 19th century.

This home is chock-full of charm including exposed beam work and detailed wooden doors.

Almost impossible to replicate the ambiance created with the original brick walls.

And last but not least, this homes’ most unique feature is the millrace that runs under the home with a viewing gallery.

HANDMADEWALLPAPER

This inspiration wall almost has the look of wallpaper. Although I may not do the same in my home, I like how the homeowner’s personality and history are displayed. A truly unique design. What do you think? Thumbs up or down?

how to dress a window

One of the most common questions I receive is what to do with window coverings.  Should I hang curtains, roman shades, woven wood blinds?  My personal favorite for casual family rooms are either roman shades or woven wood blinds.  They give the privacy you need without too much fuss like these great spaces below.

One of my go-to places is Blinds.com.  They have a huge selection of vertical blinds, roman shades, honeycomb shades, plantation shutters and even draperies to name a few.  Installation of some of these may seem daunting but Blinds.com makes it easy with how-to videos on their site.  Here is how to install woven wood blinds with an inside mount (inside mounts look best in my opinion).

in the bedroom…hidden storage

Your bedroom should be an oasis, a place to escape your busy life and relax.  Not easily done when organization takes a back seat and suddenly your room is taken over by clutter.  Hidden storage is the key to bringing peace and tranquility back into the bedroom.  If everything has a place, preferable out of sight, you can enjoy your oasis.  Here are some of my favorite “out of sight” storage ideas.
