I came across a bright, white kitchen renovation of Emily McCall. She decided to expand the kitchen into the kitchen nook and laundry area. Instead of having 3 smaller rooms, this expansion includes all these functions into one room. Here is the before picture.
And here are the afters…
And here is a new opening that looks into the dining room.
Speaking of the dining room…you must take a look at this gorgeous space too!

Today’s Room Service is for Jeanne from Manasquan, New Jersey. She just moved into her new home due to her husband’s job transfer. She needs help with designing & rearranging their family room and decided to take advantage of daily d’s e-decorating service. This family room opens up to the kitchen area so it also needs to coordinate with the style and colors in that room. Here are a few picks of Jeanne’s room in need of the daily d touch.
The color on the walls is Benjamin Moore’s Dunmore Cream and will be staying. One of Jeanne’s requirements is to fit more people comfortably in this 17’10″ X 11’2″ room so we decided on an L-shaped sectional. We will keep the soft gold, tufted recliner and move the leather chairs to another room. Here is the new floor plan for the room.
We are packing this narrow space with tons of seating and set it up to take advantage of the 2 focal points in the room, the fireplace & the TV. I have also added table lamps & floor lamps for ambient lighting and to make reading easier in the recliner. The function of the space was also important to Jeanne. For example behind the sectional are sliding glass doors to the back. The sofa table will act as a place to organize shoes in baskets & possibly hold things like the dog leash.
This room will get a fresh new look that will brighten the space with a color palette that is more in keeping with Jeanne’s shore town.
Here is the family room with daily decorator’s new design.
The room is now full of life with the new color palette, the variety of subtle patterns and the punches of black. The tufted ottoman is a large 36″ square which can comfortable hold tired feet or hold a tray on top for beverages. The tufted top coordinates with Jeanne’s existing recliner and adds that modern classic touch. Since the over-sized leather chairs are being moved out of the room I was able to bring in this better-scaled linen accent chair with nail-head trim. Above the sectional I suggest making a “gallery” wall. Black frames with large matting will make a nice impact. You could display family photos or just make color blocks using the colors in the room. I also selected tailored curtain panels made out of a cotton/linen with a nice detail of sage linen-covered buttons. I would hang them with basic bamboo roman shades to control the sunlight in the room. Hang the curtain rod several inches above window opening for the best effect. The panels should just be touching the floor.
Now let’s look at one of the focal points of the room, the fireplace.
Jeanne wasn’t too happy with her fireplace mantel. One option to consider is painting it to match the rest of the trim in the room. It gives it a fresh new look and finish the look by adding the same kitchen tile to the surround. The show stopper is the mirror. It’s a splurge but really gives this wall a boost.
In today’s modern family, the TV wall will also need to be a focal point. Jeanne was hoping to have a display area. The best answer for this was a tiered console table. The TV can either be placed on the top tier or hung on the wall. Take a look.
And another spot that we didn’t want to ignore was behind the sectional. To break up the “wall” of the sectional, I have added a sofa table with lighting. I have included some stylish storage for some shoes since this is located by the sliding glass doors.
And here is a closer look at all the accessories.
And the daily d pillow picks for this room all come from Etsy.

Today’s Room Service is for Jen who lives in Virginia. She has a living room that opens up through a large archway into her dining room. She has asked me to help make her room look finished and decorated with the daily d touch. Here are a couple of pictures of her living room now.
We are keeping the sofa and loveseat and they will remain in the same locations. The paint on the walls is Plantation Beige by Duron which is a good neutral base to start with. Although I love the 2 mirrors above the sofa, the scale is a little off. To create more of a focal point, I am suggesting that you make 3 decorative wall panels with molding {here’s a good resource}. Then hang wallpaper within each panel. It is a great way to bring in pattern into the room without hanging wallpaper on every wall. Here is a look at Jen’s design with the new focal wall and new daily d selections.
This color scheme should appeal to Jen because it has the light blues, sage, creams and whites that she mentioned she liked. I decided to select untraditional “end tables”…a book shelf on one side and an etagere on the other. There isn’t a ceiling light in this room so the 2 swing arm wall sconces will help bring light down from above and come in handy when reading. {decorator trick: add a matching piece of molding that has a channel on the back side and hide the wiring behind this molding.} The middle panel has my favorite find for this room, 2 mirrored lattice squares that help reflect light without needing a typical mirror. They are from Grandin Road and are sold in pairs of 2 for $79. I would also hang a matching pair between the two windows. Once the new linen drapes are hung, there will be just enough space to show off these gorgeous pieces. {see below}
{More on the curtains in a bit.}
The living room is right off the main foyer so I wanted to give the back of the loveseat a little attention. Here is the design plan for that.
This design adds a little more formality to the space. The 2 lights are large but keep the airy feel with the open frame base. Placing them behind the loveseat eliminates the need for end tables and keeps the flow around the furniture open. The console is made of metal and the top has a pretty green patina. The dark metal is found again in the etagere. It is a great place to display framed photos, decorative pieces and reading material.
And here is a closer look at some of the finishing touches.
And finally, here are my pillow picks for Jen’s sofa and loveseat. All are from Etsy…my favorite place for pillows.
sofa pillows {from left to right} cottagepixie, decidedlychic & willaskyehome (lumbar)
My other great Etsy find were these semi-custom linen curtains from Martha & Ash. To keep things light and airy, I would select the creamy white linen with a band of the light blue. My basic rule of thumb for hanging curtains is to hang a few inches above the window (if possible) and attach the hardware a few inches wider than the window opening. This would allow most of the window to show when the curtains are drawn. Make sure the curtains are long enough to just touch the floor.
These curtain panels will help balance the subtle patterns found throughout the new design.
I hope this helps you Jen with creating a stylish living room!
Jen has also ordered Room Service for her adjacent dining room {see below} which will be delivered on Monday. Stay tuned!

As promised, I’m back with another Room Service for Kara. This time we are working on her foyer. The area already has drama with multiple windows and a cathedral ceiling so this design needs to catch your attention. Here are a couple of snapshots of her foyer now.
Even though the foyer is usually a small space relative to other rooms in your home, it deserves just as much attention as any other room. It has to set the stage for the rest of the home. This foyer is directly across from Kara’s dining room so I decided to keep it elegant & glamorous. Here are my selections for Kara.
I believe a mirror is a must in a foyer. This large mirror from Lamps Plus {$195.91} will contrast nicely with the Sherwin Williams Nomadic Desert paint on the walls. The graceful curves of the mirror work great with the curved balustrade table. I tried to combine elegance–like the metal table–with more rustic features–like the sisal rug. I also love the distressed base of this lamp from Ballard Designs {199} with the elegant black shade.
Even the foyer needs a few extra touches. Here is a closer look at some of my picks plus a few extra final touches.
Even though I love that this space is beautiful, I can’t forget about the need for it to be functional. This doesn’t mean our functional items can’t be beautiful too.
Favorite finds:
The expandable coat rack from Grandin Road $69. Hang this to the left of the mirror.
The ever-so-fancy key holder from Etsy/thejarcollection $32
I hope this helps you Kara and I wish you the best in creating a fabulous foyer! Thanks for ordering Room Service!

This Room Service delivery is for Kara in South Carolina who needs to put the finishing touches into several areas of her beautiful home. Today I am starting with her living room. Part II will be a Room Service for her Breakfast Room which I’ll post tomorrow. Here are a few current pictures of her living room.
She just purchased The Chastain Sofa from Haverty’s in a creamy parchment fabric, we are keeping the leather club chair, the TV with console and she has a leather ottoman/coffee table stored in a different room at the moment. The walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Nomadic Desert. I’m going to “steal” her Pottery Barn Brandon Rug from the dining room and give the rest of the room the daily d touch. Some of the colors that she loves are chocolates, rusty orange and reds. With that in mind, here is what I came up with.
Using bold graphics on the pillows with the oversized bold clock and the mix of patterns brings some life to this room. Favorite finds: The Houndstooth brown and cream chair from Overstock, the lattice pillows from Etsy (willaskyehome) and the suzani pillow from Esty (masonmoonbeam).
Here is a view of the fireplace wall design.
In order to make the fireplace more of a focal point, I suggest adding more molding similar to that already found in the house. Adding a travertine subway tile to the fireplace surround helps polish the look. To keep an easy flow an assortment of round end tables does the trick. The colorful pillow from Etsy/mariescosycushions brightens the brown leather chair.
How to incorporate the large screen TV has become a common problem for many of us. Here is how I designed the media wall.
The upholstered storage bench is a great solution to the little one’s toys. It might be a good idea to use the bench with a tray on top as the coffee table instead of the leather ottoman so you get dual function out of it. Kara loves photography and has many pictures to show off. I added these picture ledges so that she can change displays as often as she likes. I’m a big proponent of ambient lighting so these sconces fit the bill. My favorite find here are the hexagon display shelves from Target.
And now a closer look at some of the final touches for Kara’s living room.
A few of my favorites are the bamboo pillow from Etsy/milkandcookiesCanada, the little pricey but oh-so-cute dog bed from design public and the armillary from Decor Universe.
One last wall that Kara was concerned about is the stairway wall. Since she loves to take pictures of her family this is a great place to have a photo gallery. I would mix photos with other elements like silhouettes, letters and graphic pictures. I would use all black frames, they can be different frames, different sizes but if they all have white matting it will look cohesive. Here is what I had in mind.
To make life easier, get rolls of craft paper and lay it on the floor. Attach a couple of sheets together until you have the approximate size of the wall space where you will hang the photos. Once you have purchased all your frames lay them out (evenly spaced apart) at the same angle of the stairway on top of the paper. Keep larger frames towards the bottom. Once you like your layout, trace around each frame ( # the frames with a sticky note) and then carefully measure and mark on the paper where your nail holes needs to go. Temporarily tape the craft paper onto the stairway wall and hammer in all nails directly on the paper into the wall. Once that is completed, carefully rip down the craft paper (you still need it for placement reference) and quickly hang all your frames. A pretty quick photo gallery!
That should do it for the Living Room makeover. A polished, super-stylish, family-friendly space that this deserving family can enjoy! Stay tuned tomorrow for Part II of Kara’s Room Service!

Today’s Room Service is for Ana who is lucky enough to have a huge 24 x 24 Family Room, with a fireplace and huge windows. Problem is…what to do with all that space? Plus how to co-exist with a plethora of kiddie toys and enjoy the fireplace and television at the same time. Here are a few of Ana’s pics…
What stays?
The sectional, ottoman, recliner, ceiling fan & media console with TV.
This room has two focal points the fireplace and the TV. Unfortunately, with the current layout, the fireplace is being completely ignored and the sitting area is facing the least interesting wall space in the room. We are switching it up and letting the fireplace share the spotlight in this room.
Bring more ambient light with table lamps & a stylish floor lamp. I positioned 2 table lamps to sit behind the couch next to the window so that they can easily be plugged in. Since that area is hidden behind the sectional, choose any narrow table to hold the lamps as long as the height is close to the height of the couch. Large toys can also be hidden away back there when not in use. I also chose a floor lamp in case you want some more reading room however, you would have to sneak an extension cord under the sectional to the nearest outlet. With a pendant light hanging on top of the game table (see game area moodboard) and swing arm lamps on toy storage wall you should have plenty of light to use instead of relying on recessed lighting all the time.
This room also has soaring ceilings with lots of wall space and I have the perfect remedy for adding interest to those walls without too much cost but lots of impact. I would suggest painting the walls a pale, soft shade of yellow like Benjamin Moores’ Light Daffodil. Then add painted white board and batten trim in a grid pattern on the fireplace wall and the opposite window wall. This is a pretty easy diy the internet has some good tutorials to follow. Another possible suggestion if you want a completely new look is to look into either refacing the brick on the fireplace or paint it white. I would love to see a chunky, thick barnwood mantle too to complement the size of the fireplace. Here is what I mean about a grid pattern.
And for a better understanding of what board and batten trim looks like here is a picture.
Now on to the fun stuff. Here is what I came up with for Ana’s traditional with a twist family room.
And the breakdown…
1. Benjamin Moore Light Daffodil 2. Pottery Barn Rustic Wood & Iron Clock $169 3. Ballard DesignsCaviallon Mirror Small $79 4. CSN Stores Sheppee Soal Table $349 5. 8. Etsy/thislittlehome Curtains $165/pair comes with 2 matching pillows (Extend curtain rods so that curtains hang outside window frame and just touch the floor.)(A basic set of cream curtains which are more affordable would also work click HERE for more info.) 9. Velocity Art & Design Mandara Pillar Candles $28 & $37 10. Lamps Plus Pedestal End Table $308.91 11. Etsy/thislittlehome (come free w/curtains)
12. Pier 1 Twist Woven Vases $59.95 & $69.95 13. Home Decorators Benecia Floor Lamp $179 14. Etsy/asmushomeinteriors $19.95 15. Etsy/sewsarahsews $9 16. Etsy/marygamelin Brown Grid Pillows $48/pair 17. To help ground the seating area this patterned rug from Overstock Southhampton Southwest Brown 8X11 $325.54
With this layout 2 other areas have been created. A game corner and a storage wall. The game corner consists of a simple cafe size table with 2 chairs and a pendant. Perfect place for your little one to play with toys, draw and later play board games.
Lamps Plus, Crate & Barrel, West Elm
And now a stylish way to store all the toys without looking like a kid’s room.
Iron Accents, West Elm Book Shelf, Pier 1 Baskets, West Elm Storage Bins, Lamps Plus, Etsy/theletteredhome, DCG Stores, Pier 1 Mini Hamper
Well I hope this helps you Ana transform your large space into a functional and stylish place to be!

Today’s Room Service is for busy stay-at-home mom Linda from Connecticut who needs a little help transforming her open-concept great room into a jaw-dropping, magazine-worthy room. She is on the right start with a brand new sofa in a neutral color, some fantastic built-ins, 2 seagrass arm chairs and a brown bordered sisal rug.
Here is a sketch of her current floor plan.
She lives near the beach so a touch of nautical without going overboard is desired. The walls are currently painted in a cheery yellow and encompass the living room, kitchen, eating area and adjoining dining room. Her current color combination is yellow with navy blue and white.
To change things up without changing all the wall color, I will nix the navy and balance the yellow with a dark chocolate and punches of green. Here is Linda’s new color key.
And here is the new, sophisticated look for Linda.
The chocolate brown and warm wood tones help ground the yellow and the green compliments both colors and prevents the neutrals from getting too drab. Currently Linda’s Sea Grass chairs are covered in a navy blue print. I selected two fabrics in brown to change the look (see color chart for details). Here’s the breakdown of the room.
1. Hyde Sofa from Ethan Allen 2. Woven Veneer Floor Lamp from West Elm $149 3. Bamboo Woven Wood Roman Shades from JC Penney $19.99-$49.99 4. Concorde Medallion Panels in green from Ballard Designs $69-$89 5. Brown Trellis Pillow Covers from Etsy/willaskyehome $64/pair 6. Green Greek Key Pillow Cover from Etsy/nenavon$35 7. Hammary Rave Bunching Cocktail Table from Home Furniture Showroom $241.50 8. Coral Lamp from Pier 1 $125
9. Hammary Rave End Table from Home Furniture Showroom $310.50
10. Ethan Allen Catalina Sea Grass Chair & Ottoman 11. Trina Turk Shanghai Links Embroidered Pillow The Inglenook Decor$57.50 12. Chambord Lift Off Top Table in French Walnut from Lampsplus $274.91.
Open to this great room is the kitchen eating area. Currently it houses a large rectangular table but the shape of this room is round. Since this area backs up to a bar height eating counter, I downsized the table to a 48″ round pedestal style table and brought some of that chocolate brown in to this side of the house with the leather strap chairs and a modern rug. Take a look.
To keep this area from feeling too stark I added an area rug. This area doesn’t currently have a chandelier so I selected this rattan pendant which mimics the texture seen in the family/TV area. There are recessed lights above the table and one of them can be converted to hang a pendant. Here are all the details to the eating area.
1. Webb Brown Leather Chair from Door Store Furniture $159.99
2. Natural Knotted Rattan Pendant from Lampsplus $217.91 3. Newport Drop Leaf Table from Crate & Barrel $599 4. Cyan Kelly Green Vase from Aracadian Lighting $41.40 5. Delta Aluminum Bar Stools from Crate & Barrel $149 (Similar chair with swivel available at Home Decoratorsfor $159 +ship) *Zig Zag Rug from West Elm $229 (5×8)
Moving back to the family/TV area, I wanted to help the fireplace stand out more. It’s in the corner and competes with a large, white, shaker style built-in cabinet unit. With just a little paint and a stencil, I was able to give this fireplace a little more prominence.
The large wooden ampersand is from Etsy/oldnewagain and here is a closer look at the stencil from Stencil Planet.
To the left of the fireplace, there is a wall with an opening to the dining room. This green metal console table below (Blu Dot Strut Table from CSN Stores $399) would fit perfectly here. (See final touches for information on other accessories pictured here.
And of course a room cannot be complete without the final touches. Here’s a closer look at some of my picks plus a few other choices to help make these spaces magazine-worthy!
1. Mercury Glass Lamp from Pottery Barn $120 2. Mercury Glass Apothecary Jars from Midnight Velvet $44.95 3. Bamboo Woven Wood Roman Shades from JcPenney $19.99-$49.99 4. Korean Fishing Glass Float from Etsy/glassfloatjunkie $16.99 5. Antique Silver Seashell Centerpiece from Nautical Luxuries$130 6. Green Ring Candleholders from Sonoma Living Green $9.50-$19 7. Green Web Vases from All Native $8.75 & $16 8. Green Chevron Pillow cover from Etsy/theperfectpalace $20 9. Brown Squares Pillow cover from Etsy/pillowpeels $14.95 10. Lumbar Pillow cover from Etsy/nenavon $15 11. Mother of Pearl Frames from Nautical Luxuries $45 & $50
Another possible floor plan is below. I would bring the seagrass chairs together and have them face the television. Put the sofa backing up to the wall of windows. This will open up the flow from the kitchen instead of creating a “wall” with the back of the sofa.
Linda I hope this helps you transform your space! It is pretty amazing how you can get a whole new look without painting the walls.

Got a cry for help from Marjorie in Tennessee who desperately needs a grown up space away from the 3 little ones that she could enjoy. I can relate to this all too well so I was glad to give her a helping hand to create a fun yet formal place to escape.
Here is her letter…
And here are a few pictures of Marjorie’s living room as is.
The challenge is to create a whole new look without getting rid of any existing furniture except for the sofa. I also wanted to give the room more character. The best way to add character is to create a “paneled” wall around the lower half of the room. “Paneled” is in quotes because we will make it look like a real paneled wall just by adding a chair rail and picture molding. First add the chair rail at about 36 – 38″ up from the floor. Then using picture molding, create rectangular “frames” around the room under the chair rail. Paint the chair rail, the picture molding and the entire wall under the chair rail in a semi-gloss white and you have added instant character to the room. The white will also work well with some of the existing wood furniture in the room.
If that project seems too daunting, another way to achieve a similar look is to still add the chair rail but hang anaglypta paintable wallpaper underneath and paint in a white. Here is one example from designyourwall.
Now we are ready for decorating. Starting with Marjorie’s sofa wall, here is what I came up with.
The wall color remains the same (Sherwin Williams Plymouth Green) but the white wall gives the room a fresh look. Marjorie also wanted to keep her large picture over the sofa. To help make it more of a statement, I suggest adding 4 other black frame pictures like above. Keeping them in the same color schemes or have them all be black and white will help tie it all together. I selected a more substantial sofa that works great with the current area rug. Keeping your large pieces in neutral colors and then layering with colors through your accessories gives a more sophisticated look and you can change out the colors down the road more easily. Marjorie’s wish list included country/vintage/modern, Asian touches, and in particular some orange. The floor lamp has that vintage feel, the Chinese stool and bamboo end table bring in the Asian flare and the pillows give everything a more modern vibe. Here is the breakdown.
1. Carolina Cottage Megan Pedestal Table $119/CSNstores 2. Tag Summer Song Twisted Wire Hurricane $39.99/Amazon 3. Kichler Balance Arm Floor Lamp $129.99/Lamps Plus 4. Loring Sofa in Ale $1199/Room and Board 5. Etsy/decofamara $18 6. Etsy/joom $16
7. Etsy/ourgreenroom2010 $18 8. Etsy/anitascasa $15 9. Tamara Coctail Table $495/Bellacor 10. Etsy/addisonblack $20 11. C0in Carving Garden Stool $102.99/Overstock 12. Bamboo Ebony End Table $145.91/Lamps Plus
13. National Geographic Tropical Bamboo Table Lamp $219.91/Lamps Plus
And next we have the window wall. Here I went for a little drama with the striking, modern curtains, a gorgeous Chippendale chair and recovered arm chairs in a green damask.
The black and white curtains allows you to introduce any other colors into the room and are a great contrast to the green walls. The current desk is highlighted more against the paneled wall and gives it more of an anchor. Using one of Marjorie’s existing lamp bases (originally on the piano), I brought some much needed light to the desk area with a modern new shade. Of course I had to add Marjorie’s favorite orange again in the pillows. Here’s the breakdown…
1. Black & White Stripe Casual Cotton Blend Curtains $79/panel/Half Price Drapes 2. Macau Chines Chippendale Chair $249/Ballard Designs
3. Etsy/bannerbabe$18 4. Striped Giclee Lampshade $69.99/LampsPlus (Want to save some $? Make a diy shade by purchasing a solid color shade and apply satin ribbon to form stripes.) 5. Concerto Celery Green Damask fabric $14/yard onlinefabricstore.net
Now on to the piano wall. If possible, I would move the corner cabinet either to the left of the french doors or (it looks a little tight in the pictures but if it fits to the left of the sofa). To have both the cabinet and the piano on the same wall puts too much weight on that side of the room. Once that is moved, you can now add some basic black shelving and display the family photos there. (You can find these anywhere like Target.) So with just a few changes…sconces, wall decor and shelving this area becomes a real focal wall.
Here’s the breakdown…
1. Black Cherry Blossom Pillow Cover Etsy/audzipan $22 2. Cindy Crawford Trellis Foot Stool $100 on sale/JCPenney 3. Butler Metal Pedestal Table $184 {sale price through 10/19}/One Way Furniture
4. Orange Vases $60/Etsy/lizetpotterystudio 5. ChooFoo Dogs $44/pair /Home Decorators 6. Arch Medium Swing Arm Pin Up Lamp $79/Home Decorators 7. Black Candle Holder $60/Spiegel 8. Gold Circles Wall Mirror $149 Pier1.com
Now for a closer look into the final touches.
1. Curtain fabric brings the drama and coordinates well with all of the other patterns in the room. 2. Reupholster the cream chairs with Concerto Celery Damask Fabric $14/yard/onlinefabricstore.net. It will bring more of that gorgeous green into the room. Plan on each chair taking approximately 4.5 yards. 3. This clock can go on one of the walls not shown. It’s Target’s Convex Wall Clock for only $19.99. Taking a look at all of the accessories you can really see how it all works together.
The layout remains very similar but I would consider moving the corner display cabinet and moving the arm chairs. Here is a possible layout.
Well Marjorie I really hope this was what you had in mind and I wish you the best in creating your get away room! Thanks for ordering Room Service!

Today’s Room Service is for Taryn and her husband who just moved into their new home. Taryn seems to be drawn to an updated classic look. Here is Taryn’s letter.
Taryn sent in some pics of her lovely new space.
Since Taryn wants to surround herself with neutrals, I added warm elements with touches of brass, bronze & a splash of gold. I also created a little more interest by mixing materials like metals, wood, leather and wool. Starting with a clean slate of Benjamin Moore’s Berber White on the walls and the gorgeous wood floors, here is what I came up with.
To anchor the room I selected a modern sofa with sloping arms that I believe is a great combination of classic & modern. I did select a patterned rug because it helps tie in the warmer colors. If this is too much pattern for your liking, a plush cream rug like West Elm’s Pebble Rug would also work. I believe the best spot for the couch because of lighting needs and traffic flow, would be up against the window wall. I suggest a narrow, sofa table be placed out of sight behind the sofa to help with the flow of heat from the rad on that wall. Not sure if this room would also be used for TV viewing, but I did include a layout that has 2 focal points…the fireplace & the TV. (More on that later.)
Here’s the breakdown…
1. JC Penney pair for $29.99 2. CSN Stores Uttermost Amberlyn Antique Gold Mirror $217.80 3. JC Penney Adjustable Metal Floor Lamp by studio $99 4. West Elm Wool Curtain Panels starts @ $69 5. Accent-Furniture-Direct Riverside Furniture Escapade Side Table $199 6. Pottery Barn Eva Colored Glass Lamp in Amber $99 7. Ethan AllenMontery Sofa $1699
8. Etsy/MaDahms White Thistle Pillow $26 9. Etsy/UtilitarianFranchise Butterfly Pillow Cover $30 10. Urban Outfitters Metal Accordion Coffee Table $128 11. Etsy/ClayMystique Blue Vase $25 12. Overstock Mission Brown Leather Tufted Bench/Ottoman $199 13. OverstockHand Tufted Jaira Tan Wool Rug 7X10 $324.69 14. Urban Outfitters Accordian Metal Side Table $60 15. Macy’sChloe Velvet Metro Living Chair (on sale)$499 Seafoam color shown (comes in Ivory too) 16. Wisteria Gold Chinese Garden Stool $129
I also did a mock up of what the fireplace wall can look like if so desired.
Here I have added a classic wood mantle in white. This particular one is from Agee Woodworks and starts at $394. The bookcase/console is from West Elm and the white version is on sale. I would love to see all that dark black stone around the fireplace covered in some mosaic tile. The tiles pictured above are Terra Milan Glass & Stone Subway Mosaic Tiles from Mosaic Tile Supplies.
In case there will be some TV watching in this room I utilized the lone corner that shares a wall with the dining room. Here is what that wall could look like.
Since no overhead lighting currently exists in the room, I have added 2 plug-in sconces that will bring some light higher into the space. These Loop Dark Bronze Sconces are from Lamps Plus and are $79.99 each. If you are still lacking light in the middle of the room one trick is to hide long extensions under the rug to the opposite couch wall. It’s not ideal but will do the trick. If installing recessed lights is not an option, consider installing outlets in the floor in areas where you need light. This media cabinet is the Paterson White 48″ Media Console that sells for $399 at Crate and Barrel. The clock is an Etsy find from decoylabs and sells for $68.
To complete the room, here is a selection of more possible accessories.

Taryn’s room has many doorways which can make furniture placement tricky. Here is a possible layout if TV watching is a necessity. (If there is no TV, I would place both chairs facing the couch on the opposite end of rug.)
I want to thank you Taryn for ordering Room Service from the daily decorator. I hope this helps you design your brand new living room!

It’s Wednesday and time to talk about some of the talented folks out there that I happen to come across while surfing the net!
Lara from the blog, less cake {more frosting} designed a “rad” surf-themed room makeover for her son.
Here’s the before.
With a new, more big boy color scheme, new accessories and bedding, Lara was able to completely transform this space. Here’s the after.
Love that color combo!

Our last lucky giveaway winner won a FREE Room Service design by yours truly. Stacy was the lucky lady and she describes her style as country modern. The bed and the dressers must stay in the room so we are giving this room a little face-lift. Here are Stacy’s before pics.
Another great bay window! Here is what I came up with for Stacy.
The goal was to bring in high contrast and texture to really make a statement. 1. Keeping the curtains a simple white, helps us highlight a couple special pieces that I’ll share in the next concept board. These panels are on sale for $19 at Pottery Barn. 2. Floor space is at a premium in this bedroom so to keep things streamlined, I selected these chic swing arm sconces from Lamps Plus selling for $119.98. 3 & 4 I came up with 2 wall paint options. The 1st is a buttery yellow from Benjamin Moore called Lemonade (2024-60). The 2nd is Violet Petal also from Benjamin Moore (1382). The bedding I selected is close in color to the Violet Petal but also works nice with the yellow. 5. A favorite and popular design is this sunburst mirror wall art from Z Gallerie ($139). 6. Since we don’t need room for table lamps next to the bed, a petite size table will help make things look less cluttered. This Alu Accent table also comes from Z Galllerie ($99). 7. The main focal point is this beautiful, black, tufted headboard from CSN Stores sells for $275. 8. I just love these West Elm Organiz Cotton Pin-Tuck Duvet Covers selling for $99 (Queen). I suggest the Light Amethyst color. 9. Another great little side table for the bed from West Elm selling for $129. I think the white or silver both look great! 10. To add some more bold contrast, throw this area rug on top of the wall to wall under the back 2 legs of bed. This Hand-tufted Black Medallion Wool Rug is a great deal from Overstock selling for $152.99 (5×8).
I want to give special attention to the bay window area. Here is a pic for inspiration on how to hang the curtains.
Keeping this in mind, here is what I came up with for that area.
1. Flank the windows with the simple Pottery Barn curtains & hang from clips. 2. I would love to see the fan taken down from the center of the room and then hang this chandelier from Overstock ($118.99) in the middle of the nook. 3. Adding color to the room & the bed are an assortment of pillows starting with this ruffle pillow from Etsy/lucillejean $13. 4. Chandelier Pillow from Etsy/diodio $25 5. Tucked into this nook is this Liberty Black Leather Bench from Overstock ($249). More pillows from Etsy… 6. utilitarianfranchise ($30) 7. mariecosycushions ($20/pair) 8. 202interiors ($40)
Let’s end with a few more touches…
1. Frame: Madison Belle($27) 2. Brook Farm General Store ($48) 3. Manzanita Wall Art West Elm ($99)
Well, I hope that helps you get started Stacy on your Room Makeover! Congrats again for winning this great giveaway! Speaking of which, we still have another giveaway going on! You can still enter to win a great print of Dolan Geiman’s multi-media artwork valued at $70. Click image below to enter. Giveaway ends on Wednesday at 5 p.m. !
The daily d gets many decorating questions and today I am going to share my Quick Fix for Nichole from Chicago. Here is her letter…
It sounds like Nichole has been very busy making this house a home! All she really needs are a few quick fixes to complete the look. Here are a few shots of her living and dining areas with a couple of suggestions. I strongly recommend NOT paying $3,500 for a window cornices! Yikes! Especially if you think you will be moving out in less than 3 years. You would not recoup that expense. Sometimes keeping the design more simple is the answer. With the few suggestions that I made, along with bringing in some more accent colors to brighten up the space is really all that is needed to make this space sing. If you are unsure about accent colors, consider using that plate on display on your shelving unit (pic shown below) as your inspiration.
I hope this Quick Fix gave you some inspiration Nichole! Remember, the daily d is also available for full room makeovers where I help shop for your furniture and home decor items. Click HERE to find out more about Room Service.
Not too long ago Carrie ordered Room Service for her bedroom. Remember this?

Well, her living room is also in need of a little help. The beige factor is bringing her room into an eternal state of blahness. She just needed help bringing a little life into the room. The furniture stays so we are just going to bring it up a notch. Take a look at her pictures.
I love the zig zag rug and we are going to use that as a starting point. We can use the brown to add some boldness and balance to the rest of the room. Bringing in the brown with accessories and some anchor pieces of furniture plus adding a subtle splash of color on the walls should bring this room from dull to divine! Here is Carrie’s Room Service…
Starting with a new paint color on the walls. I have selected Buxton Blue (HC-149) in an eggshell finish from Benjamin Moore. 1. I usually don’t pick art work for Room Service because that should be a personal selection however, this print called Teal Bubble Flowers from art.com ($99-framed) works perfectly for this design. 2. target.com Brushed Metal Clock in Espresso $19.99 3. jcpenney.com Miyoko Embroidered Faux Silk by Studio $24.99-$29.99 4. csnmirrors.com Cooper Classics 473 Vista Mirror $232 5. lampsplus.comCoffee Brown Ceramic Lamps $89.91
6. etsy.com (seller: dianekappa) $28 7. etsy.com(seller: designedbyannabelle) $40 8. accent-furniture-direct.com Butler Metalworks Round Leather Rim Table (BTL 1723) $232 9. overstock.com Espresso Birch Entry Table (29″Hx30″W) $139.99 *This large table will help fill in the corner between the couch and loveseat. 10. homedecorators.com Savoy Bar Height Chair $129 11. etsy.com (seller: mariecosycushions) 2 black, brown, grey holly print pillow $30 12. westelm.comWoven Vases $29.99-$39.99 (zig zag rug belongs to homeowner but similar rug sold at westelm.com).
Hopefully, this Room Service will help Carrie get rid of the blahs forever!
I have been receiving great feedback on daily d’s Room Service! It is so great to receive these messages and know that Room Service is inspiring people to make their homes a happy, comfortable and stylish place to be! It is one of my favorite things to do for this site. I just received a wonderful message from New Yorker Deborah who was a pleasure to work with and really assisted me by being able to express exactly what she wanted out of her master bedroom. Check out what she had to say by clicking comments under her Room Service post. I can’t wait to see her after pictures! I also received a fantastic review from Michelle on her blog today! Remember her Room Service a few weeks ago?
Click image above in case you missed it. Any who, she had such kind words to say on her blog. Click HERE to check it out. She already moved some furniture around and has plans to tackle the rest. Here is her first after pic.
Thanks so much for your kind words everyone! It really is appreciated! I will be contacting all previous recipients of Room Service to let them know that for daily d’s 1st birthday in January, I will have a before and after contest. Recipients can send in their after shots anytime before the end of the year and readers will vote on their favorite after pictures. More details to come so get your rooms ready and maybe you can win a prize!
