Take advantage of all the fresh blooms available now and create unique arrangements. Here are some ways to make your flowers take center stage:

1. Use unorthodox containers.

2. Display one large bloom in a bud vase.

3. Arrange a bunch of the same variety of flower or flowers with the same color scheme.

4. Cut the stems so the blooms burst out of the edge of your vase.

I’ve Been Framed!

Here are some more ideas for decorating your walls. Expensive artwork isn’t the only thing deserving of wall space in your home. Anything from vintage maps, greeting cards, calendar pages, textiles, photos, kid’s art–even just the frames themselves can hung proudly and give your room a designer look. So start collecting some frames.

Antique shops, yard sales and flea markets are great places to start. If the art within the frame is not your taste, use your imagination and frame to your heart’s content! For your inspiration…

Easy-On-The-Wallet-Decorating… Part 3

Here is another easy-on-the-wallet decorating tip. Make your own art. An easy way to achieve this (especially for the artistically-challenged) is to frame found “art”. Use your imagination for your art. It can even be 3 dimensional and then you can put it in a shadow box. Here are some ideas that can be purchased but are just as easy to diy on the cheap.

Window Fashion

When it comes to window coverings, I prefer simplicity for the most part. When in doubt, long, white, cotton panels do the trick in many rooms. If your windows have intricate molding, don’t hide them behind heavy drapes show them off by hanging roman shades. If you are daring, use a bold print to create a focal point in the room. Easy-On-The-Wallet Decorating

This economy can sure put a damper on our decorating dreams. For many of us decorating fanatics, we do need to be more selective than ever and maybe pace ourselves a bit, but we don’t need to completely put on the brakes. The daily decorator will feature some easy-on-the-wallet decorating ideas each week this summer. It is one of the easiest ways to freshen up a space with minimal damage to your bank account. In the pics below, I transformed my parent’s living room with a quick coat of paint (2 actually) on a feature wall and a few accessories mainly purchased from Pier1. As you can see in the pic below the room was looking washed out and tired.

I pulled the color from their couch to put on this corner of the room to help highlight the fireplace and the bookcase.

Bringing this color to this side of the room created balance and the needed contrast with the white built-in bookcase and white “mantle” to make these great features stand out.

With a few accessories strategically placed on the bookcase shelves I was able to create a clean, un-cluttered look.

There is still a little more to do. A new flat screen t.v. has been purchased and we are on the lookout for a sleek t.v. stand (now if we can only pry away that purple chair from my father…) Although the room is not completely done yet, the paint color has already given the room an entirely new look. Definitely an easy-on-the-wallet decorating project!

Top Ten Spring Design Tips Countdown…#2

#2 KEEP THE FIREPLACE THE FOCAL POINT IN THE SPRING SEASON BY GIVING IT A FRESH, SPRING LOOK

After your last fire of the season, give your fireplace a good cleaning and then decorate the mantel with spring inspiring finds. Don’t neglect the interior of your fireplace either. Replace the dirty ashes with a large bundle of thick, white birch tree branches. Tuck in magnolia or rhododendron leaves. The white bark will brighten the dark void. Another idea is to display a collection of terracotta pots of different sizes. Fill each with a little bit of sand and large, white pillar candles. This will light up your room in the spring evenings without bringing the heat. Check out some ready-for-spring fireplaces below.
