Big day today…1st day of school! There’s the squeal of bus slowing down to pick up the patiently waiting passengers & out the rolled down windows flows the chatter of kids filled with excitement and nervous energy as they drive on by. Copycat Design

Sometimes you come across a room design that you want to duplicate in your own home but on a budget. The room below is from House To Home magazine. I took the feeling of the room and “copied” the design using a similar color palette and put my twist on the room. Here is the inspiration room…

By replacing the crystal chandelier with a capiz chandelier and the expensive pharmacy lamp with a floor lamp in the same color family, I was able to replicate the feel of the room on a budget.

Easy-On-The-Wallet-Decorating… Part 4

The daily decorator continues today with some easy-on-the-wallet decorating ideas. Today we look at ebellishing store-bought items to make them your own. Making the ordinary extraordinary! With a little imagination and a lot of creativity you can make a great design statement starting with the basics. Get inspiration from great sites like readymade.com and etsy.com.

Here is a basic bookcase turned into a functional piece of art!

Gluing buttons to the inside of an Ikea lamp creates a designer look.

Back to Ikea, here are cut Ikea bath rugs put together to create a one-of-a-kind rug.

Getting inspired by all the great artists and crafters on etsy, here are stenciled curtains that I absolutely love.

Or how about this fabric-painted pillow?

Look what some ribbons and pom pom fringe can do to a mediocre lampshade!

You can stencil numbers on canvas bags for a great look.

For a similar look like the one below, paint a terra cotta pot and stencil a letter or number on it for a graphic look.

Here is another easy-on-the-wallet decorating tip. Make your own art. An easy way to achieve this (especially for the artistically-challenged) is to frame found “art”. Use your imagination for your art. It can even be 3 dimensional and then you can put it in a shadow box. Here are some ideas that can be purchased but are just as easy to diy on the cheap.

Easy-On-The-Wallet Decorating… Part 2

As promised, here is another easy-on-the-wallet decorating post! Today I am focusing on decorating the home with items from around the house creating fab look for less! Try and think of creative ways of using items already in your home or possible hiding out in the garage that might actually have great decorating potential. Here are a few ideas…

Everyone has mason jars around. This is a summer must…fresh cut flowers in a mason jar. My favorite is to display my hydrangeas which are just starting to bloom here.

Stealing another idea from the pic above is using burlap as a tablecloth. It is super cheap and looks great on an outdoor table with your nicest china!

This burlap would also be an affordable way to update and reupholster some accent chairs. You could even stamp on fabric paint for a custom look.

When entertaining, use a large, enamel bucket to hold the beverages. When not entertaining, roll up guest towels and keep in bathroom.

Below is another cute entertaining idea. Or use as a small vase to sit next to bathroom sink.

Decorating with fruit is also an affordable way to create a colorful display.

Use tea towels to make a cute curtain.

Or sew tea towels together to make a unique tablecloth…

Or grab those dusty, old suitcases out of the attic and put them on display!

So look around, do a little scavenger hunt in your own home and see what treasures you can find!
