Room Service For Nichole
January 29th, 2010
Nichole from the Chicago area, is back for Room Service for her living/dining room. She received a daily d Quick Fix not too long ago and wants a little more help to complete the look she has started. Here are some of her pictures from her Quick Fix to refresh your memory.

To jump start this room makeover I am using Nichole’s beautiful, decorative plate as inspiration.

Her furniture has a lot of curvy features so we will repeat that in some of the furniture selections and try and accent with reds, golds and white. Here is Nichole’s Room Service for the living area…

To compliment the curves in the sofa, I am suggesting a round, sunburst, convex, decorative mirror above the couch instead of the large, rectangular mirror. The large bay window was a concern for Nichole and flanking the sides of the window with these bi-color and simple window panels hanging a few inches above the windows should do the trick. They will also tie into the dining chairs. Of course use the same panels on the window near the table too. Replacing some of the metal furniture with wood will help anchor the living area better. I am also suggesting moving the secondary couch out of the living room and replacing it with 1 or 2 slipper chairs for better flow. Here are all the details…
1. Convex Nova Wall Art $129 westelm.com 2. Pillows $20/pair etsy.com-mariescosycushions 3. Bi- Color Linen Window Panels $49.99 westelm.com 4. Camden Coffee Table $249.99 coffeetablesgalore.com
5. New Informality Hammered Table Lamp $149.91 lampsplus.com
6. Camden Accent Telephone Table $219.99 coffeetablesgalore.com
7. Double Pull Bronze Floor Lamp $169.91 lampsplus.com 8. Handmade Ferns Taupe Rug 5′3″x8′3″ $186.99 overstock.com (*hint-to get the right size at least the front legs of your couch and the front legs of your slipper chairs should be on the rug) 9. Slipper Bamboo Chair $229.99 overstock.com 10. Iridescent Bronze Sienna Pillow $19 etsy.com-pillowthrowdecor
Now for the dining area. This is a compact space so I recommended that Nichole’s corner accent table be removed. This allows the dining table to slide in closer to the corner. To make it a little more intimate, I am suggesting that the fan be replaced with a chandelier. The one I picked comes with a swag so that it can be hung easily over the middle of the new location of the table. It also has that nice, coppery color that we are pulling from our inspiration piece. I also included many possible accessories to give you some ideas. They don’t all need to be used.

Here is the breakdown…
1. Iron and Beige 4 Light Chandelier $99.99 overstock.com 2. Hotel Noir Clock 18 1/2″ $59.99 target.com 3. Framed Wrought Iron Wall Art etsy.com-dipdesigns 4. Italian Glass Vase $45 pier1.com 5. Red Borneo Tree Placemat etsy.com-kainkain 6. White Ceramic Candle Holders $28 etsy.com-fineartstoneware 7. Pure White Vases from$7-$71 westelm.com 8. Dandelion Plate Set $32 etsy.com-soule 9. 36″ Flat Mocha Wood Shelves $34.99 (buy 2-3) target.com
So there you have it! Nichole, I really hope this helps you finish making your house a home!

I’ve Been Framed!
January 22nd, 2010
Here are some more ideas for decorating your walls. Expensive artwork isn’t the only thing deserving of wall space in your home. Anything from vintage maps, greeting cards, calendar pages, textiles, photos, kid’s art–even just the frames themselves can hung proudly and give your room a designer look. So start collecting some frames.

Antique shops, yard sales and flea markets are great places to start. If the art within the frame is not your taste, use your imagination and frame to your heart’s content! For your inspiration…

Vintage In Vogue

20Age is a company that gives new life to vintage furniture. The old is stripped down and given a fresh new look. Take a peek at some of my favorite chairs that they have redesigned.

It is amazing what a little elbow grease and fresh upholstery can do! Has anyone tried this at home? Have you rescued a chair from the doldrums? Send in a picture!

daily d Q & A
January 19th, 2010

Thanks for your message Lauralee. I do have many ideas for you! Thinking outside of the box and repurposing items is one of my favorite things to do! Here are some ideas!
1. Attach a row of chrome key hooks and use it to store your keys near the door. You could attach vinyl letters or stencil with paint to personalize it. Attach picture hanging hardware on the back and you are ready to go.
2. In the same vain as my 1st idea, create a coat “rack” or robe/towel storage with a door. Attach large hooks like the one pictured below.

3. Create art for your wall and decoupage squares of a wallpaper with a bold graphic.
4. I do like your magnetic paint idea. If you still want to see some of the wood just tape out a smaller square or rectangle and apply the paint to that area only.
5. My final idea was actually one I posted about last spring. Monica from Craftynest shared how to transform a cabinet door into a tray.

Click HERE to get the how-to on that. Good luck and let us know what you decided to do!
Hip Hotel Design
January 18th, 2010
Many boutique hotels around the world use design to set them apart from all the other hotels. Hotel Re! in Singapore is no exception. The Hotel Re! has a ’60’s-70’s vibe with bright colors, retro-style furniture and bold, iconic, pop culture graphics. Here is a peek.
