Living Large…Loft Style

March 12th, 2009

At Better Homes & Gardens, they have a quiz entitled, “Is Loft Living Right For You?” which I took knowing that I would be “failing” it.  I’m a country girl at heart and prefer to see trees and farmland outside my windows than city buildings.  However, there is a lot to be said about loft style living.  It really is a lifestyle choice.  As the article in BH&G pointed out, living city loft style entails easy access to cultural events, nightlife, shopping and usually short commutes to your city job.  I admit, in my rural town, I need my car to go everywhere, the closest thing to a cultural event is a night at the movies and we do have 1 or 2 “nightlife” spots if closing at 11 p.m. counts.  Still, I think I’ll just visit the city and enjoy what it has to offer as a visitor.  Although loft living is not for me, I can appreciate the industrial stlye and massive space that they are famous for.

What I really love about loft spaces is that more often than not, lofts are created from the redevelopment of old, long-abandoned industrial/commercial buildings.  It is the ultimate in green recycling.  Adaptive re-use of warehouses, factories, sawmills and sometimes churches into loft spaces is an interesting way to revitalize unused real estate in cities.  See the Clock Tower building in San Francisco below.

And check out these other living large lofts.
